Another great passion I have, in addition to photography and travel is live music that, fortunately, it integrates seamlessly with the first two. I often organize a trip to a city, maybe even already visited, in conjunction with some music festival. If the Sziget Festival in Bulgaria every year seems to lose the charm and quality reduced to a mere week of devastation for 18yo if Glastonbury is too commercial and definitely off the beaten track in Barcelona every year in late May, there is the Primavera Sound Festival, the largest independent music festival in Europe. Barcelona has certainly needs no introduction, and in May also be the best for the climate. I participated at the entire edition year 2011. My accommodation was the Albergue Studio Hotels (www.alberguestudio.com – email@example.com) a great hostel, a little ‘out of area but in front of the metro station, so still very comfortable.
The festival takes place in the large paved area of the Parc del Forum (no mud), in the city center (next to the sea but no camping), The stages are 8 and concerts take place simultaneously from 16:00 pm until at 5:00 am (the tops will look, run from one stage to another, mosh for 12 hours a day and sleeping 8 hours in 4 days you will reduce a mop). A shuttle service connects the venue of the festival with the main square of Barcelona (Placa Catalunya). On Saturday night there is a subway in operation for the whole night and then back to the hotel will not be a problem, other days you have 2 options: either take the night bus 7B that passes in front of the exit of the park, or, I chose to do as I wait for the morning service resumption subway.
Given the very large time of the event, you definitely need to eat and drink, inside there are several dining options with snacks but I recommend you hide cans and bottles somewhere since the prices are the stuff inside restaurant 3-star Michelin.
The cost of the Primavera Sound Festival is € 180 , ABSOLUTELY worth them all , in the 2011 edition to which I witnessed were present , to name only a few :
Animal Collective , Belle & Sebastian , DJ Shadow , Echo, Einstürzende Neubauten , Fleet Foxes , Grinderman , Interpol, John Cale and Band , Jon Spencer Blues Explosion , Julian Lynch, Low, Mogwai , PJ Harvey, Pulp, Public Image Ltd, Shellac , suicide , Sufjan Stevens, Swans, The Flaming Lips , The National, The Tallest Man on Earth , Yuck …… if you know music , you know what I’m talking about. A festival that alone is worth a career as a viewer to live! Barcelona , more or less we visited and we know it, this is your chance to see it from another point of view and a great excuse to go for a few days !
